Hi folks Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. The water is warming up and the fish are starting to bite. I’m hearing of some nice Redfish and Trout being caught back in the sound and in the surf . The Mullet are showing up in the surf as well. The north end of Lea Island is giving up some nice Drum and it shouldn’t be long before the Bonita are here. All the water has to do is get to 60 degree’s for them to show up on the artificial reefs just offshore. The brave-hearted are doing good on Yellowfin around the Big Rock and the other usual hotspots. Sorry I can’t give up those numbers but you folks understand that I’m sworn to secrecy by the guys telling me this stuff. They keep telling me that the water is deep and cold out there so I had better keep it to myself! Those offshore guys are as protective of a hot bite as a momma bear is of her cubs and I don’t want to aggravate those good old boys or they wont tell me nothing. Well it’s getting that time of the year and everything is going to be biting before you know it so whatever your favorite fish is, get your stuff ready cause it’s fixin to bust loose. I get all giddy feeling when I think about it, don’t you?
Turkey season is just around the corner and I hope you have been practicing your calling and have your shotgun sighted in. You do,don’t you . Well if you miss that longbeard, there is no one to blame but yourself. Remember that it is bearded turkeys only and some hens will have a beard too. I’ve seen more than one or two in my days. Also other folks may be doing the same thing so be sure of what you are shooting at before you pull the trigger. If you need some help in identifcation, the turkey ain’t but a couple of feet tall and don’t scream like hell when you pepper them with birdshot. Be careful folks, blaze orange is out during turkey season and shooting someone will ruin your and their day. well thats it for this week so till next time, take a kid with you and be safe. Capt. David

There have been some good catches of gray trout, a few Virginia mullet and small black bass right off the beach, at John’s Creek, High Rock and the new dredge spot about a half mile off Kure Beach pier. Inshore, the fishing is getting better also. If you like fishing for Virginia mullet go to the mouth of the Cape Fear River. We have had some good catches last week. They are not very big, but very good eating size at about a pound apiece. The piers will be opening soon so we will start having pier reports. I think the cold weather is out of here, spring has sprung. So get your fishing gear out of hibernation and start fishing. Good new for ya’ll that fish on the south end. The Fort Fisher Trading Post has now expanded their fishing section and is now selling live minnows. Stop by and check them out.
Keep fishing and stay safe.

Hello everyone. Our fishing charters out of Wrightsville Beach, Topsail Island and Carolina Beach are doing great. Our new websites www.carolinabeachfishing.net and www.wrightsvillebeachfishing.net are having a great response with our customers and we thank you for checking them out. Our main site www.reel-adventure.com continues to grow and we have added yet another cool video “Topwater Speckled Trout Fishing” which is really cool to watch. Check it out!
This season is off to a great start and we sure have had some great weather. This weekend it is going to be in the 80’s and it is reminding me of the Florida weather I was able to enjoy over the winter. We are doing well on the near shore wrecks with the Sharks, Tautog’s and other bottom dwelling species and we even caught a monster 4 lb ring tail!
Inshore the redfish are biting well on Berkley Gulp! on the warmer days in the shallow water, and they are also biting well in the ICW on dead shrimp fished on a carolina rig. They key this time of year is a slow presentation and patience. The blue fish bite is starting to pick up and the Spanish should not be far behind. We are excited about what this upcoming fishing season has in store for us!
We have also been busy building rods for customers and for the business as well. Each year I continue to get more and more custom with these rods and at this point the “Custom aspect” is getting hard to top. You will be amazed at our new inshore redfish and trout rods that we have mated up with Abu Garcia’s new 804 spinning reel. These reels are giving the Stradic’s and Okuma VS series reels a run for their money and after fishing hard in the Everglades all winter with the new Garcia’s I think they are better than both and are also a few dollars cheaper.
We are starting to get busy with trips but still have lots of good dates open. Come enjoy the Wilmington weather and let’s catch some fish!
