NC Fishing - Hunting - Outdoors Reports

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. Well duck season is over and about the only games in town are rabbit and quail hunting. Coon and possum season is still in as is Snow, Blue and Ross’s goose. Now is a good time to go predator hunting as well Bobcat are in season and you can check you local fox hunting laws. One of the newer large predators in the area are Coyotes. These critters have been spreading eastward for years and are in every county in N.C. and there is no closed season on them. Heck I’ve seen them in Landfall in Wilmington! A distressed rabbit squeal is a surefire way to get any small game predators in range. Any good centerfire rifle or rimfire above a .22 longrifle will do the job. Now don’t feel bad for them they are a invasive species that will feed on everything from small dogs and cats to young deer. Now if you are done till next season go ahead and clean and oil you firearms and put them in storage. Be sure to use gun locks if you have small children and if you don’t have any most all of the police departments have them for free. Remember that gun safety begins with proper education and properly securing your firearms. Don’t hide them from the kids, teach them the right way. Folks guns don’t kill people, people kill people! I almost forgot next Saturday Feb.2 is a special youth waterfowl day which means you can’t hunt but the kids can. Load them up and take a video camera and have some fun! Leon Phelps and I went on the last day of season and didn’t shoot any duck but we did bag a couple of geese on the sound. It was Leon’s first goose and he was about as happy as anybody I’ve ever seen. He waded about 300 yds across the marsh to retrieve his trophy. It will be at the Taxidermist very soon. The cool thing about it is the memories created when hunting with your buddies. Priceless!
Now lets talk about fishing! Ain’t nothing biting much so the best thing to do is get ready for spring. Like I said last week, you might catch some fish but It’s way too cold for this old boy to go fishing! I’ll wait till the water temps and air temps get a little warmer. Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report. It’s the time of the year when things are winding down in the outdoors. There might be a hungry fish somewhere that will bite but I never could get fired up to go fishing when I had to dress like an eskimo. Now I understand that some of you folks might be from up north where ice fishing is a popular pastime but a southern boy like me ain’t getting cold and wet! You might be thinking to yourself, Capt. Dave you go duck hunting all the time! You are correct. I’m dressed in neoprene chest waders to keep me dry and warm, I’m wearing a warm coat and the water ain’t but knee-deep. Oh I ain’t hunting but a couple of hours either!
It’s a good time to look at all the wishbooks. You know the ones, Basspro, Cabelos, Gander mountain, Etc. Fold the pages and leave it where your better half can find it and when he or she picks it up it will fall open to the page with the new toy you just got to have! Remember to be subtle with the hints and stuff too. I have found one thing to be true boys, if it’s your idea it sucks, if it’s her idea it’s great.
Most of the small game species are still in season and duck season goes out on Saturday the 26th at sunset. I really hope that this frigid weather will push some birds down here for the last day of the season but I figure the birds will be here the first weekend of Febuary as usual.
Now is a good time to get a headstart on that maintenance you need to get done. Take the boat and get it tuned up and ready,service the batteries and check the trailer over. This time of the year most of the boat shops are not that busy but come the first warm days of spring they will be slammed for the summer. Don’t be the guy at the ramp who has unloaded his boat and parked the truck only to find out the boat won’t run! If you have bought a boat and ain’t that good at backing it go to a big parking with it and practice backing up some. Heck teach the wife to back it too. Most women are better at backing up a trailer than men. If you don’t believe that the boat ramp can be a circus go down on any weekend and sit and watch. It’s great entertainment when you ain’t involved!

Hi folks, Capt. David here with this weeks outdoors report.

Well the fishing is terrible and the ducks are few and far between. Some hardcore folks are catching a few Reds in the surf and inlets but the majority off the fish are not biting. If you just have to go though I would try up in the backs of the creeks. I’ve heard of some nice Trout in Kings creek and Turkey creek. Just remember that they are real shallow and you may not be able to get in and out without a jon-boat and then you may have to walk it a little way to get to the deeper water back in the creek. Nobody is going outside now so the reports are zip on that. Folks it’s cold and ain’t nothing much is going to happen till the water temps reach around 60 degrees. That’s just the plain facts ya’ll!

On the hunting side, there are a few birds around but not many. It just ain’t gotten cold enough to push a bunch of birds down here yet. We can always hope for cold weather up north. Some Bluebills or Scaup are around and some Buffleheads too. You can always count a Merganser to drop into the decoys and maybe an occasional Black duck or Mallard. Its still slow hunting these days folks. I took one of my buddies from Virginia hunting a couple of days and we saw birds but they were heading somewhere besides where we were set up. We did get a drake and hen Bluebill and shot a lot of shells. Hey we wanted to keep them on their toes! We really like to call those misses warning shots. Then again it might be defective shotgun shells. Huh! Any of you folks having that problem too. I can’t believe that I missed those birds. Well thats about all I can ramble on about so you folks be safe and take a kid with you. If they can walk they are old enough to go with you!
